In Germany 2005, a ground breaking study began using Essential Oils in Classrooms and Home (during kids homework time) to investigate if EO could improve class motivation, concentration and behavioural issues. Initially 1 school was involved, by 2009 - 799 students had participated from various schools after a National Article (2005) was written with regards to the success.

The study found that improvements in students’, “concentration, attention, motivation, and social behavior.” Using essential oils in the classroom can be an easy way to enhance student learning and improve the atmosphere of the school (Jellinek, 2010).

12 of the schools, who participated in the study, whilst using EO stated they were without a case of allergies or objections against scent.

Though it must be noted that in another study by Elke Inspruckner, said “she has known the value of essential oils as well as the effect of high-quality essential oils in creating better air quality, reducing stress and creating a good atmosphere in schools.” Synthetically produced fragrances were not eligible for Inspruckner's study because they have no health benefits. Therefore if using Essential Oils in a Classroom ensure that the oil is Therapeutic Grade Certified and EO that has not been diluted with other oils (unless specified), or alcohols unless specified.

Natural scents can reduce exposure to bacteria, viruses and fungi, a fact that has been scientifically proven since the 60s. Fox News originally reported that over 50 hospitals in USA are using Essential Oils with exciting results. The oils have been used to increase healing benefits such as immune support, mood lifting properties and supported holistic health. In Tennessee Hospital, EO are being used in the Emergency Rooms to boost productivity and health. Beth Israel Medical Centre, New York are using Essential Oils for relaxation and pain relief benefits assisting patients (Fox News 17, 2013)

A lecturer at a Hannover University also uses oils to enhance attention span in her lectures. She uses her neuroscience background to enhance learning environments. There are many EO which have been said to increase memory capability, calm and assist the brains cognitive functions. In recent studies (Tiserand) Rosemary has been said to increase memory by 75%. The German study revealed that concentration results doubled to 40%.

For educators, parents, health workers, these findings are interesting, exciting for some and certainly more studies need to be completed. There are many ways to introduce Oils into your classroom but if you choose to use Essential Oils, discuss with your administration, check with students parents. TeacherPayTeachers have a free download for parental consent for EO use and use oils which are appropriately diluted.

If you do not want to use a Diffuser, others have used EO drops on cotton balls, placed around the classroom and some schools use aids such as Sensory Playdough. Parents can make Rollerball blends for their child to use at school and in the German project, for homework each student was given a porous stone to simply place near them whilst they completed their work.

The choice is certainly yours. Another amazing study was a 2yr longitudinal study on children with ASD and ADD and the use of Vetiver. Please go to the blog post on Vetiver to read the full results of this clinical study. https://samanthagracebeaut.wixsite.com/love/single-post/2015/05/08/Vetiver

There is so much literature and studies which have been completed on Essential Oils, for further reading please see below and previous blog posts:
